I quit on a whim, with no back up plan.

Stacey - Champagne and Gumboots.jpg

Tell me a bit about yourself, Stacey. What do you do?

I run my own successful business, Champagne and Gumboots. I am the only Coeliac Australia accredited baker in WA, I specialise in creating divine gluten free cakes, cupcakes, cookies and desserts that taste so good you’ll never know they’re gluten free!

I design delicious wedding cakes, cupcakes and birthday cakes as well as attending a number of Perth’s best markets including Perth Upmarket.

I’m also a recipe developer and food photographer, I have a selection of fabulous eBooks full of scrumptious gluten free recipes plus a new Membership program teaching people to bake gluten free online all over Australia, The Sweet Course Academy.

What caused your soul searching to find your dream career?

It was more of the straw that finally broke the camels’ back. I was working as a regional manager for a national jewellery company, that required full devotion and sacrifice. I missed family events, worked over all Holidays and drove myself into the ground with stress.

One day I finally cracked and could no longer put up with the stress levels. My husband and I had been trying to get pregnant and had done everything we could to deal with my fertility issues. The one final step was to reduce my stress. I quit on a whim, with no back up plan.

6 months later I was pregnant and we accepted a transfer with my husband’s job to move home to the country (where both my husband and I are from). My pregnancy was rough and I had several complications that included a lot of bed rest so I did a lot of reading and surfing the internet. I decided while we were building our new home to start blogging! From there I realised people were coming for my gluten free recipes and so it went from there!

Ultimately, I always knew I wanted to work for myself. My parents were always self-employed from farming to retail, I grew up working for them. But I,  like so many people got stuck in a job making good money that I was “good at”.

What do you like most about your work?

I love the flexibility of working at home, it enabled me to look after my son before he started school but still do meaningful work that gave me an identity outside of “Mum”.

I also love the varied work, I get to flex my creative bone constantly designing new cakes, working in the wedding industry, developing new recipes and food photography! I also love that each day looks different! I get to make time for the things that matter to me like being able to fit in exercise, time with my husband and attend school things for my son like assemblies!

Can you share one tip to help others figure out their dream career?

At the end of the day we all tend to have an idea of the things we love to do. I was a teenager when I fell in love with photography and I’ve loved baking since I was 9 years old. But so often the world and school convince us to follow “main stream” routes and careers. I did this and I ended up lost in a world I convinced myself I belonged in.

Don’t wait, there will never be a right time to start doing the things you love.

If you could tell your past self one thing in regard to your career change, what would it be?

Just because people tell you you’re good at something it doesn’t mean you have to continue doing it. You also don’t have to go to Uni to have a “career”.

I took risks and thought of my passion

Maira - Solidace Create.jpg

Tell me a bit about yourself, Maira. What do you do?

I help entrepreneurs and business owners to build and grow their brand through social media management, branding and FB Ads while living the life they love.

What caused your soul searching to find your dream career?

Ohh well, it’s about my purpose.. Truth to be told, I was lost and exhausted of what I want to do in my life. Before, I just wanted to earn money and that’s all. I didn’t have a dream job as every time I imagined myself doing it for the rest of my life, it made me cringe. I was an introvert and I still am so this journey is not an easy path. I took risks and thought of my passion and what I’m good at. I didn’t hate nor love my job before, it was just that, I didn’t have the reason why I was doing it and the only thing that made me excited the most was, money. This was my main reason why I should decide and find my dream career. It was not feeding my soul.

What do you like most about your work?

I really love making and designing social media graphics and other marketing collaterals. These things don’t make my work really hard as they are challenging to me at times and these make me enhance my skills more. What I also like is helping and connecting with different people, I love traveling so talking to people, understanding their culture and having a good community inside the platform excites me. I also like that I am learning from them and having collaborations. These really make me glad and grateful!!

Can you share one tip to help others figure out their dream career?

Don’t rush yourself and take it slowly. Know your greatest why to know why you are going to pursue it. Sometimes when we are really happy, we tend to decide quickly and just go with it, you have to think and ask yourself “do I want to continue doing this after 5 years?”. But you know what? My greatest tip is to just, START. Don’t overthink, just start now.

If you could tell your past self one thing in regard to your career change, what would it be?

Don’t be afraid, just do it! Nothing will happen if you’re not gonna take action.

Our biggest challenges often lead to our biggest breakthroughs

December 30, 2020 Cindy Graham-Schmidt
Nikki Justice.jpg

Tell me a bit about yourself, Nikki. What do you do?

I host retreats and events for women to work on themselves and their businesses. To take a break from our busy lives, connect with like minded souls and fill up our cups so we are feeling lit up AF.

I'm also a singer and working on some projects to perform in 2021.

What caused your soul searching to find your dream career?

10 years ago I worked in a fast paced, high stress job in construction as a Project Manager. At the time I was also studying law and was intent on climbing the corporate career ladder.

That is until the rug was pulled from under me and I lost my Dad.

The journey of grief led me to reassess what was important to me in life and in the process of healing I tapped back into all the things that used to light me up when I was younger, creativity, singing, art and writing.

I have done a few things since then, including running a successful memorial business which led me to the retreat business (because I needed a damn break!)

My marriage breakdown earlier this year has also been a big motivator to start living the life of my dreams on my terms.

Our biggest challenges often lead to our biggest breakthroughs, that has certainly been true for me.

What do you like most about your work?

I love the beautiful connections I get working with women, the laughter and soul chats!

And when it comes to singing and performing there is nothing else like that feeling and buzz when you step on stage and sing your heart out to a crowd, its the best!

I love that my work lights me up!

Can you share one tip to help others figure out their dream career?

Find what lights you up the most, and do that. If you don't know what that is, explore, play, have fun, try new things and start over and over until you find it, having a great time while you do!

Also, if there is any self doubt or fear around what you want to do, my advice is 'feel the fear and do it anyway'. I used to think I wasn't good enough to sing, if I didn't push past the fear I would never have made my dream come true singing on stage to packed crowds who cheer me on!

If you could tell your past self one thing in regard to your career change, what would it be?

The grass IS greener, do it!

Where can people find out more about the work you do?

I hang out on the gram @nikki.x.justice and you can learn more about what I do at nikkijustice.com.au
